Katie earned a degree in Human Biology from the University of Montana, and following graduation worked as a lab researcher for UM's Center for Structural and Functional Neuroscience. Katie received her law degree from the University of Montana School of Law, and her legal Masters (LL.M.) from the University of Colorado in Intellectual Property and Information Technology Law.
Katie works as a solo attorney in Missoula specializing in intellectual property, patent and trademark law where she helps businesses, start-ups and entrepreneurs protect their ideas, inventions, brands and other assets. Katie loves being part of Montana's start-up scene, and knows how important small businesses are to Montana's economy. Katie is also part owner of a family business.
Katie has a passion for all things science and technology and is especially interested in supporting innovation in Montana, helping entrepreneurs, increasing access to high-speed rural broadband and protecting Montanans online privacy and security. In 2016, Katie drafted legislation to protect Montanans' private data from being used and sold by corporations and social media without permission. With the help of former HD 89 Representative Nate McConnell, the legislation was sponsored and brought before the Montana Legislature.
Katie met her husband, Phil Stempin, at UM in 2003, and they got married on top of a ski hill in 2011. Phil is a Columbia Falls, MT native. Together they live in the University District with their two cats and big dreams for the future!
